Phase 1
Phase 1 of the Charlotte Gateway Station Project represents completion of the railroad infrastructure needed to access the Charlotte Gateway Station & District by passenger rail. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is leading the Phase 1 design and construction.

Phase 1: Track, Structures and Signals (TS&S) & Intercity Rail Platform Project Details
- Two 2,000 foot long station tracks located between 8th Street and 3rd Street
- Signals to govern train operations
- 5 new railroad bridges at West 4th Street, West Trade Street, West 5th Street and West 6th Street and at the Bank of America greenway
- 1,100 foot long ADA compliant, high-level passenger boarding platform and canopy foundations
Phase 1 will:
- Separate passenger trains from freight operations
- Improve freight traffic flow to the intermodal facility at Charlotte Douglas International Airport
- Include a connection to NCDOT's new Charlotte Yard where train maintenance will occur
Project start date: Construction began in July 2018
Project completion: September 2022
Contractor: Crowder Construction Company
Cost: $80-90 million; Funded through a combination of local, state and federal funds including $30 million via Federal TIGER Grant
